Wait, screen time?
We understand that there is legitimate concern about screen time for very young children, but here’s the difference: YOU! With Music Together Online, the active participation of the parent or caregiver is key. This is a very different experience for the child than staring at a screen and passively receiving information or entertainment. SO, just like in our in-person classes, you’re still the most important part. Your teacher will be on the screen, but it is truly the interaction of YOU with the child that is going to continue their music development! We will give you lots of fun activities, ideas, and songs to do at home all day long. Just as in our in-person classes, we don't expect your child to sit still or "pay attention" to the screen! If the adults keep making music with the teacher on the screen, and have a good time, your child will soak in the experience in their own way, in their own time, and show you later what they have been taking in.
Rhythm Kids - Ages 4 - 7
The next musical step for your preschool child and an introduction to instrument instruction. Using Djembes to teach drum technique and rhythm patterns from around the world, we’ll drum, sing, use other rhythm instruments, and play music-based games. Kids this age can begin to take charge, lead others, and be musically creative. We’ll be using a multicultural curriculum, using our new “Animal” song collections. More information here.
Birth - 4 Years
Almost all of our classes are mixed-age groups, including children as young as a few months and as old as four or five years old. Educators have long considered mixed-age groupings to be beneficial, and the Music Together® program is designed with this in mind. Activities focus on adult/child interaction, so children of different ages (siblings, for example) enjoy classes together in a family-like atmosphere.
Young children naturally learn language by interacting informally in mixed-age settings - and it is the same process for music. As in a large family, children of different ages learn musical, social, communication, and other skills from each other as well as from the adults — while their individual development is stimulated in age-appropriate ways.
The Music Together "mixed-age" curriculum and philosophy is educationally appropriate and musically challenging for children up through kindergarten age. While many children in our program are younger than that, if your child is pre-school age, please know that “older” kids thrive in our mixed-age classes, where they will continue to be challenged musically, while enjoy a leadership role, and the educational benefits that come from increased confidence and sense of mastery. They’ll also have opportunities for special interactions with the teacher, as they start making greater use of their growing musical, verbal, movement, imaginative, and social skills.
It can be beneficial, if possible, to have a small group of "older" children enrolled together in a mixed-age class, so look for specially-marked classes on the schedule, if you wish.
But mostly, pick the time that works best for your family's schedule, and don't worry too much about the labels.
Infants - 0 - 8 months
They may be pre-verbal, and pre-mobile, but they're not pre-Musical! A specially designed one-semester introduction to music for our youngest music-makers. Musical activities such as finger play, lap songs, peek-a-boo songs, gentle dancing and songs without words are emphasized. The pace is a little slower and quieter than our mixed-age classes, so there's great opportunities to notice and encourage the babies' musical responses.
You'll learn dozens of new songs and chants to sing to your baby all day long. And you'll hear a lot of great tips about how to encourage their musical and language development, and ways to have sound-and-movement conversations with them.
A great way to have fun with your new baby, learn how they learn, and meet other new parents.
Infants are also welcome in our mixed-age classes, if your schedule doesn't work for this class, or you'd prefer a more energetic class environment.
If your baby is already or nearly crawling, it's time for them to join one of our many mixed-age classes.
Pre-Season Demonstration Class - All Ages Welcome
Demonstration classes are held before each session so families new to Music Together can experience a class before enrolling. What is Music Together? What are classes like?
Music Together Sing Shalom
Music Together® Sing Shalom music classes combine everything you love about the internationally recognized Music Together early childhood music education program with a carefully selected collection of familiar (and not-so-familiar) Jewish songs from throughout the world. Music Together Sing Shalom classes introduce Jewish themes, holidays, and celebrate community through song, supporting parents and caregivers in introducing their children to a diverse, culturally rich Jewish musical heritage. You’ll learn lots of ways to interact musically with your child, supporting their development, strengthening family relationships, and helping them connect with the Jewish music tradition.
Families will receive the same song collection as our other Music Together classes, supplemented with other digital and printed resources.
Music Together Sing Shalom is a pilot program being developed in collaboration with the The Jewish Education Project with funding by UJA-Federation of New York.
Music Together Outdoors
We're excited to be making music together in person again!
Classes will be held on the lawn of Saint Philip's Church in Dyker Heights, and in several NYC Public Parks
To reduce the risk of transmission of Covid:
o reduce the risk of transmission of Covid:
-- We will be meeting outdoors and socially distance-SING!
-- Class size is limited to 8 families per class
-- Each family will remain on their own blanket, at least six feet away from the nearest family's blanket. While it is a big change from our pre-pandemic policy, we will ask the adults to prevent their little ones from traveling over to another family's blanket, in order to maintain proper social distancing.
-- We will not be sharing instruments, but instead will be asking families to bring instruments from home for their own use during class. We will send suggestions of home-made or purchased instruments to bring
-- Masks will be worn by adults, and chlidren age two and up. It is possible that the instructor may teach without a mask, if fully vaccinated and at a distance greater than six feet.
-- In case of rain, or other conditions which make an outdoor class unfeasable, the class will be made up on Zoom. We will not be offering make-up dates for cancelled outdoor classes. We will notify class by text message and/or website announcement if the class is moving to Zoom that day.
Please note, that while we have done our best to find convenient and appropriate locations in the public parks, we can not predict or control conditions there on any given day!
We realize that outdoor classes are not for everyone!
We will be doing our very best to create the best possible class experience, but flexibility and a sense of adventure are good items to pack in your bag! We will be in a public space and there are many things out of our control, such as weather, ground conditions, bugs, noise, other people using the park, etc.
(Saint Phiilip's Church lawn may have fewer possible variables.)
Please consider your comfort level regarding these conditions prior to registering for class.
